The word ‘sankara’ refers to a conch sea shell that produces a haunting sound when blown. According to the epic Hindu poem, Mahabarata, the horn-like noise of the sankara often signaled the beginning and end of battles between opposing Indian clans. In Bali it is used as a ceremonial instrument during rituals of purification to neutralize negative energy and create a peaceful ambiance.
